While Worcester County graduation rates are much better than statewide averages, roughly 30 students drop out of Worcester County Public Schools annually. The youth mentoring program serves 6th graders through high school seniors with the goal of improving academic performance, social outcomes and ultimately graduation rates for school children. This initiative plays a vital role in identifying students with warning signs of disengagement from school, such as truancy, low grades or behavioral issues. Positions as youth mentors are consistently available.
BYC is a program designed to offer meaningful cultural, educational, and wellness experiences to children during out of school time. The Berlin Youth Club believes that each child has the ability to harness their strengths and achieve great things within their own community. The BYC aims to identify and highlight these strengths in each child, allowing them an opportunity to shine as they explore the world around them through meaningful activities. Above all, the BYC teaches that respecting ourselves as well as others is the key to success.
SAGES is an innovative program that helps adolescent girls who are experiencing difficulty or conflict in their homes or schools. The goal of the program is to enhance the abilities of each girl, so they are able to take full advantage of their talents, academic interests, career pursuits, and relationships. Program evaluation has demonstrated that SAGES has had a significant positive impact with 100% of the girls making improvements in the areas of personal strengths, interpersonal relationships, family functioning, handling emotions, and school functioning.
The transition from childhood to adulthood, beginning with early adolescence, is an exciting and challenging period impacting individual youth at different rates and manifesting in different behaviors. For some young men this can be a time of great social stress and a struggle to understand their place at home, school, and in the community. It is important for them to develop both the self-confidence and sense of responsibility required to make the best decisions during this transformation period. SABERS embraces the individuality of each youth creating unique programs balancing the desired goals for each young man with those of the group.
